About Pre-Apprenticeship Pipe Trades Training Program

The Pre-Apprenticeship Pipe Trade/Plumbing Training Program has been designed for 15 individuals (per year) to learn and train to be able to enter the pipe trades. This 31-week full-time training program will provide the trainees with essential skills, academics and hands-on training and development to allow them to build the basic competencies while preparing them to be able to pass the trades entrance exam through Math, English and Science upgrading which will make them eligible to write the first-year apprenticeship exam in pipe trades.

Essential Skills & Academic Upgrading which includes:

Applied Skills Development Training/ SAIT Pre-Apprenticeship Hands-On Training:

  • Identify common tools used in the plumbing trade and describe their applications
  • Demonstrate safe use of basic hand and power tools used in the plumbing trade
  • Interpret and apply the information in basic drawings to complete a project
  • Extract relevant information from basic drawings and designs
  • Demonstrate fundamental applied piping skills through projects such as:
    • Copper bending and soldering
    • Iron pipe threading
    • Pex pipe project
    • Installing basic plumbing fixtures
  • Describe, install, and service ferrous pipe, non-ferrous metal pipe, non-metallic pipe, and fittings
  • Implement basic mathematical skills relevant to the trade, utilizing metric and imperial measurements
  • Install and service plumbing fixtures and trim
  • Describe considerations for working with different types of pipe and materials
  • Explain steps and considerations for designing, planning, and completing a straightforward piping project

Safety Training:

  • Demonstrate awareness of occupational safety

  • WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems) 2015
  • H2S Alive
  • Construction Safety Training System CSTS-09
  • Confined Space Entry
  • Fall Protection
  • Transportation of Dangerous Goods

  • Canadian workplace integration
  • Occupational English communication skills
  • Life & work management skills
  • Occupational health & safety
  • General employment preparation

Work Experience with Industry

Eligibility for Training

  • Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • 18 years old and above
  • Unemployed or marginally employed due to limited essential skills and occupational language skills, lack of knowledge of Canadian employment practices and lack of Canadian experience
  • Eligible for Employment Insurance (EI) or Income Support, as assessed by Alberta Government/ Advanced Education
  • Physically fit and capable of working long shifts
  • Class 5 driver’s license is an asset
  • Minimum Canadian Language Benchmark 5
  • Strong interest in establishing a career in the plumbing trade
  • Good interpersonal relationship skills
